PIKES PEAK – THE VIEW FROM ABOVE COLORADO

November 2, 2014 in Trips in Western United States

During my April 2014 trip to Colorado, my cousin and I decided to give Pikes Peak a shot.  For those who aren’t aware, Pikes Peak is a mountain in Cascade, CO that sits 14,110 ft (some sources say 14,115?) above sea level.  If you’re feeling ambitious you can hike it or bike it, and for everyone else, there is the Cog Railway (as you can see in photos below) – or even drive your own vehicle.

My cousin and I chose to drive the mountain in her vehicle.  If you are considering Pikes Peak, be aware that the ride is rather intense for the faint of heart!  If you have a fear of heights, I highly suggest you don’t drive it.  There are plenty of sharp turns and rail-less edges to make your knees weak.  I will admit, my cousin did the driving and I was absolutely terrified as we got higher and higher up.  I have a tremendous fear of heights so there were points when I found myself closing my eyes praying we wouldn’t go off the edge.

We found some interesting things along the way up the mountain, such as the North Pole and my favorite……the bigfoot crossing sign!

Fortunately, we made it to the summit safely (obviously) and the views were well worth it.  Be ready for cold temps as you get to the top!  When we started the trip, the temp was in the 60’s or so.  When we reached the top it dropped to 33 degrees!

What you need to know before going: To drive Pikes Peak, you are looking at fees of $12 per adult, $5 per child, or $40 per carload.  Also, be sure to check the weather before going.  If they are calling for bad weather, they will close the mountain off to visitors.

Because of the high altitude, some folks might have breathing problems.  I personally did not, but be aware that your experience might be different.

FINDING INSPIRATION IN UNEXPECTED PLACES

October 1, 2014 in Travel Quotes / Trips in Western United States

Have you ever had a moment while traveling when something out of the blue happened to inspire you?  I’ve had a few of those moments, and I love when they occur.  One of those was during my California trip in 2013, meeting a celebrity photographer who gave me advice that completely changed my perspective.  When I came home, I did a total revamp of my website and did a lot of reflecting on my work.  You can read the entire story here.

I also had a small  moment last year while wandering in Colorado.  I had just checked out Red Rocks Amphitheater when I started driving back toward Denver.  Just a couple of miles down the road from Red Rocks, I found a little park with some hiking trails.  I decided to stop and check it out.

I walked the trail enjoying the beautiful scenery and occasionally passing a mountain biker or fellow hiker.  As I kept walking, I thought about turning around a few times because of my horrendous sense of direction – I didn’t really want to get myself lost.  Ultimately, I decided to just keep going.  The views continued to become even more amazing and the trails gradually became steeper and steeper.  I kept powering through despite being terribly out of shape and knowing I was in a place where the air is much thinner than I’m used to.  I found myself standing high on top of Morrison, Colorado – and I blacked out for a short second upon getting up there too.  So much for pacing myself in the Colorado altitude!  Luckily I snapped out of it pretty quickly.

I stood there and just looked out, feeling like I had just conquered the world.  To many it was a small feat, but to me, it was an amazing feeling.  I pushed myself to reach the top and I did it on my own – and the views were definitely worth it.

I then noticed a large flat rock below me that said “THE MIND IS EVERYTHING.  WHAT YOU THINK, YOU BECOME.”  That is when I realized it was all worth it.  That day, I moved one step closer to being what my mind wants me to be.

So when everyone else thinks i’m strange for traveling solo, I think they’re strange for not.  People miss out on a lot of “a-ha” moments when they don’t try.

THE VIEW FROM LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN – GOLDEN, COLORADO

September 22, 2014 in Everything Else

Lookout Mountain was kind of an “oops” that my cousin and I stumbled upon when I was out there in the Spring.  She and I drove around only to run into signs for the lookout as well as Buffalo Bill’s gravesite.  I can’t even begin to tell you how gorgeous the views were from both places.  You can hit both spots – the lookout as well as the Buffalo Bill Museum in one trip.  You can’t miss the signs so they’re super easy to locate.  Click each photo to see it larger – these just don’t do it justice!

On your way back down the mountain, you’ll likely see people biking, hiking, and hang gliding.  We also noticed 3 or 4 deer eating right on the side of the road, practically in the road, without a care in the world.  I had my GoPro attached to the side of the car when we came across the deer but as my luck has it, I somehow managed to accidentally delete it from my computer.  🙁

If you happen to be in Denver and you’re looking for something to do outside of the city, surely check this area out!  This drive was definitely one of the highlights of my trip!

Check out my short little iphone video of the lookout below:

EXPLORING GARDEN OF THE GODS – COLORADO SPRINGS

September 14, 2014 in Trips in Western United States

Last April I took my first trip to Colorado, something that had been on my bucket list for quite some time.  My cousin recently moved out to Denver so it was the perfect opportunity for me to see her and to see beautiful Colorado.

In the little bit of time I got to spend with her while she wasn’t working, we hit Garden of the Gods, a place that people kept telling me  I HAD to visit.  I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by how amazing it was.  It really wasn’t too far from Denver either!

This is a perfect trip for someone who’s broke (like me) because it’s free to access!  And you know what?  Who doesn’t like free?

It’s a strange location because it feels like you are in 2 places at once…..Arizona and Colorado.  The red rocks sit in the foreground with the Rocky Mountains standing high in the background.  You’ll find rock climbers, hikers, and tourists flocking here.

I highly recommend you check out Garden of the Gods when in Colorado!  Take a look at the photos below to see what I mean.
